With all of the anxiety surrounding 40k right now (both due to the upcoming edition change and price hikes) I anticipate that there will be many in the future looking to expand their gaming options to other games. Naturally, there can sometimes be some tension as one side will assert that their game is "better" than the other, but the fact remains that some might be looking to expand their horizons, and that's okay! For those who might be interested in starting Warmachine/Hordes - or just to add another faction - the battlegroup boxes are naturally a great place to start. These are all the same cost ($49.99) and offer a warcaster/warlock and some warjacks/warbeasts from which you can build a larger force in the future.
Now that all of the battlegroups are plastic, I think it's time to look at each and I will rate them based on two criteria: 1) Value - compared to the cost of purchasing the models separately, and 2) Longevity - how useful will the models be for building lists and expanding on the faction in the future. I like to give weighted values to these, so while I might seem a bit harsh on particular scales, I do rate them relative to each other. For the record, I think that all of the battlegroups are worth buying because they are at least 25% cheaper than buying the models separately and they all give a great feel for what the game is like.

Editorial: Open Letter to Games Workshop
I've been thinking about writing this article for some time now. I've been spending a lot of time talking to my good friend (the one who made the 40k diorama) about why I've been disillusioned with Warhammer 40k and Fantasy and Games Workshop in general. It's been difficult to put into words over these last couple of years but the other day I think I finally figured out exactly why I'm having so much more fun with Warmachine/Hordes and why, even with the impending release of 6th Edition 40k I'm generally not excited - and in fact pessimistic about its release. I think that Games Workshop (GW) has been making decisions that impact me, as a customer, in very negative ways recently, and they have a policy of keeping things exactly the same as they are. I think that's dangerous and if GW wants to win back more customers like me, I think they have to take some big steps forward and change. Please note that I am not trying to preach to anyone here, that is not my point. I am not trying to "convert" anyone, but merely trying to share what I believe to be steps for GW to take to make their game more enjoyable overall. As much as they claim that they are a 'miniatures company' first, without their games, they would doubtfully sell as many miniatures as they do now.
I warn you that this is a really long article and a giant wall of text. I will first share my story, as I think it informs my pessimism about the upcoming release of 6th edition, but the end of the article is where you can find my open letter to Games Workshop, so if you wish to skip all of the background, feel free to jump right there. First, I would like to share my story.

Follow-up: More than just a business
I noticed recently that there was an interesting announcement made my Privateer Press regarding the Boneswarm model. If you're not aware of what I'm talking about, let me provide some important backstory. First, the Boneswarm is an old metal model from the old Iron Kingdoms line (made for the RPG) that has recently been made into a playable light warbeast for the Blindwater Congregation in Hordes: Domination (see my spoiler on it here). There was some drama about the transition of this old Iron Kingdoms model into the Minions line because there was a significant price increase (which I discussed towards the end of this article) from $10 to $19. Privateer Press has prided itself as being a company that stays connected to their player base, and this was a surprising move for them, and there were some unhappy customers.

Cost of starting a new army
We've all seen them. Price comparisons between Warmachine/Hordes and 40k. However, since I am currently building a Trollbloods force, I am hyper-aware of how much a full force costs. Granted, there are lots of sites out there that offer discounts or buyer-rewards programs, but at the end of the day, it's still quite expensive to start a new faction for any game system. This has also become even more apparent for me as I pondered updating my Tyranid force to playable strength, thinking that Mawlocs might be a wise investment for dealing with tanks. At any rate, today I wish to compare the cost of the 50 point Trollblood I will be starting, and a 1750 point Tyranid army - both of which I believe are the most expensive armies for their respective game systems.

Editorial: Signs of an abusive relationship [with your game company]
Today I wish to discuss an important subject. I first want to say that I take abusive relationships very seriously, and I hope that you can take this post very seriously. Abuse in relationships is not exclusive to physical means but abuse can take a purely emotional toll. "But this is a gaming blog..." you might say. You are right. Today I want to discuss the same behaviors that are observed in abusive personal relationships and apply that to what I said in this article about miniatures games as a hobby being more like a relationship than other hobbies. |

Learning Center: Warmachine/Hordes Core Mechanics
So its been a busy week but I hope that my articles have inspired you to at least be curious about Warmachine/Hordes if you have not played before! If you have played before, I hope that I might have inspired you to start playing again. I will be writing two more articles that will follow in the next couple of weeks, explaining the differences between fury and focus, and some of the more common special rules in the game. If you want to learn the basics, this is an article for you!
Warmachine and Hordes are two different sides of the same coin - a miniatures game where big steam-powered machines called warjacks are thrown into combat against giant beasts of flesh and bone! Do you dream of giant robot combat? Do you get excited by the idea of giant 6-limbed elephants slamming giant werewolves into the ground? This is definitely a game of brutal combat, hardcore, aggressive and tons of fun!

Editorial: More than just a business
Today we have an
editorial for you by me! I make no
claims to be an expert in business but this article comes more from my observations
of the past few months and my limited knowledge of human nature. Warning!
Great Wall of Text incoming!
TL;DR can be found at the end
Something new and strange is happening in the world of business today. Thanks to the internet, the world is becoming increasingly connected on a global scale. No longer am I limited to my experiences in my own town, state, or even country, but now I am connected to other people in other parts of the world. This has huge implications in all areas of our lives but as a teacher, I am really feeling the impact in my classroom and feel like this is changing what it means to be a successful business.
